To help companies build experiences that put their users in control of their personal data, and aims to provide our customers with the best resources to understand the challenges and opportunities around privacy, Didomi has built the Data Privacy Barometer, a single source of truth for anyone interested in data privacy and consent management best practices.

Browsing the interactive sections of this free data visualisation tool, visitors will be able to:

  • See the evolution of privacy and data regulations around the world over the past decade, visualised in map and timeline formats;
  • Get key information and access written content about specific countries and their data privacy laws;
  • Discover exclusive insights on data collection practices, based on Didomi data, broken down by industry and purpose;
  • Understand performance of the various cookie & tracking consent notices, per format and layout, thanks to real data from Didomi's Consent Management Platform (CMP).
Exploring data privacy regulations around the world

The first thing the Data Privacy Barometer provides is an interactive map, offering a snapshot of the evolution of privacy and data regulations around the world over the last years. This animated, visual timeline puts in perspective how widespread data privacy regulations have become over the last decade, allowing visitors to see the regulatory status of each regions' local laws.

This comprehensive data has been gathered by our team from publicly available sources and official legal texts, like the "Data Protection and Privacy Legislation Worldwide" data from the UNCTAD and will be regularly updated to keep up with the ever-changing global privacy landscape. The goal is to centralise information in on place to give visitors a reliable go-to resource about privacy regulations and updates.

Understanding tracking and data collection

In the second section of the page, focused on digital tracking, Didomi has gathered exclusive insights about the various actors that collect tracking data across the web. Known as vendors, these actors collect data either directly on websites or share it with other vendors, for a variety of purposes (tracking, advertising, social media etc.).

Using data retrieved thanks to Didomi's Compliance Report, accessible at the bottom of the Barometer page, the Data Privacy Barometer offers two advanced visualisations that explain the way data is tracked across the web, and why.

The interactive visualisation shows the average number of vendors per industry, giving a deeper look at the network of vendors involved and showing wide disparities between verticals. For example, "Media & Publishers" use over 1 600 vendors for 7 purposes on average, while "Retail" websites use just over 450 vendors for the same number of purposes.

The second part of the section focuses on these very purposes, answering the “why” behind consent collection with an overview of the main purposes declared by vendors, and a deeper dive into each industry and purpose specifically.

The data shows, for example, that "Analytics & Tracking" purposes make up for only 1% of the purposes declared by vendors across all industries, or that in the "Gaming & Entertainment" industry, 60% of vendors collect data for "Advertising & Affiliation" purposes.

Designing consent banners with users in mind

As a leading, widely deployed CMP, Didomi's data also provides very valuable insights about which types of banners are most effective in generating positive consent, which is an important KPI for digital advertising professionals.

The last section of the Data Privacy Barometer provides consent banner performance benchmarks, showcasing the different types of consent notice formats and indicating positive consent rate that can be expected for each, by industry.
