FTC Sues Data Broker Selling Geolocation Data; Elon Musk Seeks Twitter WhistleBlower

In today's ExchangeWire news digest: the FTC sues an Idaho data broker for selling sensitive geolocation data; Elon Musk seeks information on Twitter's alleged security flaws from a company whistleblower; and Indonesia's GoTo acquires a local cryptocurrency exchange.

FTC sues data broker for selling geolocation data

The US Federal Trade Commission is suing an Idaho-based data broker, accusing the firm of selling sensitive geolocation data from millions of devices. While the FTC has raised legal action against Kochava Inc. previously, this case specifically concerns data sold by the firm that could track individuals to reproductive health clinics.

The FTC’s lawsuit follows months of heated debates over the privacy of individuals seeking to end a pregnancy after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in June of this year.

Elon Musk subpoenas Twitter whistleblower

Elon Musk is seeking documents and communications from Twitter’s former head of security Peiter Zatko, whose complaint against the social media company for “egregious deficiencies” regarding security and privacy was made public last week.

Musk’s legal team have sent a subpoena to Mr Zatko, requesting information on how Twitter identifies, monitors, and handles fake accounts on the platform. The billionaire, who is embroiled in a legal feud with Twitter after withdrawing his bid to purchase the social media platform, also seeks details on reports allegedly sent to Twitter higher ups about the company' security failings.

Indonesia’s GoTo acquires cryptocurrency exchange

Gojek Tokopedia (GoTo) has stepped towards digital assets by purchasing an Indonesian cryptocurrency exchange. PT Kripto Makisma Koin, which is one of only 25 cryptocurrency exchanges to be licensed by Indonesia’s Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, was purchased by GoTo for USD$8.38bn (£7.16bn).

GoTo’s existing services include food delivery, e-commerce, and fintech solutions, and acquiring PT Kripto Makisma Koin is intended to help the Jakarta-based holding company become “a diverse money management hub”.
