Social platforms told to stop suggesting children as friends

In accordance with the Online Safety Act, Ofcom has declared that social media platforms should not be suggesting children as “friends” by default. This guidance is intended to help fight online grooming, as the communications watchdog suggests how platforms can tackle illegal content, including child abuse online. The expectation is for the largest platforms to change default settings so that children aren’t added to suggested friends lists – something which groomers often exploit. Additionally, platforms should ensure that children’s location information can’t be revealed in their profile or posts, as well as preventing them from receiving messages from people who are not in their contacts list.

ChatGPT to power new Snapchat lens

Snapchat will be rolling out AR lenses which use ChatGPT, the platform announced at Lens Fest, its annual developer event. Lens Studio for developers will include the ability to create filters with ChatGPT. Demonstrating the function of the new lens, Snapchat shows a solar system filter where a user asks “How far away is Neptune?” The lens delivers a response within a few seconds.

Consumers now able to order Amazon Fresh without Prime

Amazon has announced that it will now be offering grocery store delivery and free pickup to all customers in US cities where Amazon Fresh is available, regardless of whether they subscribe to the tech giant’s Prime membership. Previously, this option had only been available to Prime members – although members will continue to save on exclusive discounts and offers, including delivery fees. Amazon plans to continue opening stores throughout 2024.
