AI chip maker Nvidia has been sued over using copyrighted material to train its AI model NeMo. Three authors, Brian Keene, Abdi Nazemian, and Stewart O'Nan claim their copyrighted books were used without permission by Nvidia to train NeMo to simulate ordinary written language, which was later taken down “due to copyright infringement”. The case attests that the takedown reflects Nvidia admitting NeMo was trained on the copyrighted content. They are seeking damages for those whose copyrighted works helped train the language models over the past three years.
Staying in the realm of AI, Elon Musk has said his startup xAI will open-source Grok, challenger of ChatGPT, this week. The announcement closely follows Musk suing OpenAI over abandoning its original mission to provide AI for good instead of for profit. The plan to open-source Grok means xAI will join the list of companies which have published the codes of their chatbots to the public.
Elon Musk is also introducing more changes to X: the platform has launched long-form articles for its Premium+ subscribers. Essentially a blogging function, this new part of the platform includes all the basic elements of a blogging tool, including a title and image for the post. Additionally, users will be able to embed additional images and videos into their articles. Articles will appear on a user’s profile under a new Articles tab, and will appear on followers’ timelines the same way as regular posts.
