Thanks to the Digital Markets Act, Apple will be allowing third-party app stores on iPads within the EU from today (16th September). The change will take effect alongside the iPad’s next operating system release, iPadOS 18. This follows recent modifications in which Apple began allowing alternative app stores on the iPhone within the EU region – timings differed due to different DMA compliance timelines for both products. As of now, there are five third-party app stores available on iOS for users of Apple’s products within the EU.
In the streaming sector, Spotify is seeking to make further profits via video. The audio giant is reportedly making offers of up to seven figures to encourage creators to distribute their video shows to the platform. The deals Spotify is looking to establish are said to vary considerably in structure however, depending on the talent. Some simply ask creators to upload their shows for free in exchange for marketing support. The move is part of Spotify’s ongoing push to grow its video catalogue.
Turning our attention to the AI arena, OpenAI has launched o1, a series of AI models which are “designed to spend more time thinking before they respond”, as a person would. The new models are able to reason through complex tasks and solve more difficult problems. Training has taught the models to define their thinking process, try different strategies, as well as recognising their mistakes. However, OpenAI explains that as an early model, o1 does not yet have many of the features which make ChatGPT useful, such as the ability to browse the web for information.
